Hydrant

Lake Delton Water Utility Promotes an

“Adopt-A-Hydrant” Program

The Lake Delton Water Utility is seeking the help of both residents and business owners in the Village of Lake Delton who have fire hydrants located along the street next to their property, and ask you to please “Adopt-A-Hydrant”.

What is involved in adopting a hydrant?

When the snow stops falling, and it is time for you to clear your driveway, sidewalk, or parking lot please take a minute or two and check on your neighborhood’s fire hydrants and dig out an area of approximately 3 feet completely around the hydrant.

Why should I or my business consider adopting a hydrant?

The Wisconsin winters of the past few years brings a special concern for the Lake Delton Water Utility and the Delton Fire Department.  Winter storms can often hide the fire hydrants under a mountain of snow and then after the plow trucks have cleared the roads covering the fire hydrants with more snow making them impossible to find quickly in the event of an emergency.

Isn’t that the job of the Water Department or Firefighters?

Sure the snow removal around the systems 386 plus public fire hydrants is the responsibility of the Water Utility employees, but due to the increased snow fall we have been receiving the in the recent years, and the plow trucks recovering already cleared hydrants it will be sometime before the Water Operators David Sterr and Glen Struble can reach all the hydrants in the system and then by then there may be another storm.

In the event of a fire, firefighters have to locate and shovel out the fire hydrants before hooking up to them.  Precious time is lost; a fire could double in size several times.  Please don’t let you neighborhood hydrant remain under cover.

By taking a few minutes to clear your “Adopted” hydrants, you will be assisting both the Lake Delton Water Works and the Delton Fire Department.

You can do this year round by clearing accumulated snow from the top and in a three foot (3') clearance around the hydrant, also keeping the hydrant free over overgrowth (grass and weeds) the rest of the year.

The house or business you save might just be your own!
